Buying A Used Car From Ebay Or Classified Ads

By Jeff Hendrix
Most people who sell their cars themselves decide to do so because they want to get more money for it than the wholesale price offered by dealers for the car. The rationale for them is that the time and effort it will take to sell the car is well worth the extra money earned.

This does not mean however that a private seller can charge the same amount for the car that a dealer can. The reason for this is that a private seller has no way to offer a warranty on the car unless the manufacturers warranty is still left. Private owners also have no overheads like dealers do like paying for facilities and sales people. Because of these two things a private seller should charge less for the same car than a dealership does. This is all relative however because no two cars are the exact same and thus the prices charged for them cannot be the same. If you find a private party that is charging a lot more than what you would pay at a dealership for the same car, either the seller likely has an overestimated the cars worth, or it is a very rare, well kept car.

Curbing is a practice to be aware of. Curbing is when sales people from the dealerships take cars home and sell them as if they were private sellers to make some extra money. There is nothing wrong with that, but the problem lies in that the cars they end up selling are 95% of the time the cars that the dealership could not sell otherwise. If you run into a seller who does not have the title in their name, it is likely that they are curbing the car and you should walk away.

Other than the lower cost, by buying from the original owner you also get the tremendous advantage of their complete knowledge of the cars history. They will know exactly what repairs have been done, problems and good sides of the car. If you do buy from a person like this I still recommend getting the car inspected. People lie and on a purchase as big as a car you will want to make sure you are getting a good deal.
